Stillorgan College of Further Education is committed to providing an educational service to students in a caring and friendly environment that fosters learning.
During the course of the year, students are encouraged to talk to their teachers to solve any problems or difficulties that may arise. Your Student Advisor, Guidance Counsellor, Deputy Principal and Principal are also available to talk to students if problems remain unresolved.
The College offers a Career Guidance and Counselling service. This service provides support for students in the following areas to ensure their college experience is a positive one:
- The guidance service offers advice to students enabling them make informed choices in relation to further study options and career choice.
- The counselling service provides a confidential environment in which students can explore personal issues which may be causing them concern.
- Learning support is available to students who may be experiencing difficulty settling into College life. Advice and support in areas such as Study Skills, Time Management, and any issues around the preparation for exams and assignment writing are available.
Psychological Support Services
The Psychological Support Service (PSS) was established in January 1992 by County Dublin Vocational Education Committee to address the special needs of schools and centres in the scheme. The Service is made available to second level Schools, Colleges of Further Education, Youthreach Programmes, Traveller Training Centres and VTOS programmes. The model adopted for the operation of the Service incorporates a multidisciplinary approach directed towards:
- The resolution, through assessment and therapeutic intervention, of behavioural, motivational, emotional, and cognitive difficulties of individually referred persons.
- Preventative work with target groups.
- Professional support of teaching staff in relation to persons referred individually and to other professional issues.
- Personal support of teaching staff in relation to school or centre issues.
- Support of parents, both in relation to individually referred young persons and other school or centre-related issues.
- Placement of Intern or Trainee Psychologists.
