Stillorgan College of Further Education is committed to reducing our Carbon Footprint. To this end, the college is an active participant on the Green Campus Programme.
We have developed a Green Campus Charter to promote this aim and this Charter can be read here: Green Campus Charter.
Some of the activities undertaken in recent years to help achieve this are:
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Eco Conference for Secondary Schools, 2017,2018 & 2019
Event Management students from Stillorgan College coordinated and managed the 2017, 2018 & 2019 Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Eco Conferences for secondary schools. These week-long conferences featured keynote academic and environmental speakers, activists and NGOs presenting to young people on a broad range of sustainability issues such as climate change, climate justice, water conservation, sustainable transport, sustainable food production, sustainable tourism, biodiversity and waste reduction and energy conservation.
Information & involving the wider campus & community
Over the three years approximately 1000 youth participants attended these conferences. In addition, students across a number of courses in Stillorgan College gained work experience from working on various aspects of these conferences, e.g. Photography Media & Multimedia, Art & Amination students. We estimate that approximately 200 Further Education students gained direct exposure to sustainability concepts from working at the conference. A further 400 students and 20 staff were indirectly exposed to the concepts covered in the conferences.
Publicity was gained for all the conferences in local & national print media, on national television and on the college & Eco conference social media accounts and websites.
Sustainability & environmental assessment integration & links to learning
Since 2017 staff at Stillorgan College have integrated sustainability and environmental themes and concepts into QQI assessments and learning outcomes where possible. Details have been provided to An Taisce on an ongoing basis since our Green Campus application in 2017.
